Austra—the long-running pop project of Canadian vocalist and composer Katie Stelmanis—returns with Chin Up Buttercup, out November 14 via Domino. Known for her operatic voice and dramatic compositions, Stelmanis turns inward on this fifth album, written in the wake of a sudden breakup that left her emotionally unmoored. Co-produced with Kieran Adams and inspired by the hypnotic Eurodance sound of Madonna’s Ray of Light, the album blends cinematic melodies with pulsing beats, offering a vulnerable yet defiant response to heartbreak. Chin Up Buttercup is both a grief album and a dance record, where Stelmanis’s striking voice channels sorrow, chaos, and resilience into something fearless and cathartic.
