Liquorice, the third album from Australian indie pop artist Hatchie (Harriette Pilbeam), is a raw, emotionally rich exploration of longing, lust, and regret. Captured in a spontaneous backyard photo shoot, the album cover – smudged-lipstick close-up – mirrors the music’s unpolished charm and personal vulnerability. Written between Brisbane and Melbourne from 2022 to 2024, Pilbeam abandoned overt musical references in favor of intuitive songwriting, revisiting the melodic simplicity of her early work and embracing imperfections as creative strengths.
After previously collaborating with high-profile producers, Pilbeam chose to create Liquorice with just one partner: indie artist and producer Melina Duterte (Jay Som). The result is a collection of songs that reflect the dizzying highs and aching lows of fleeting romance, blending romantic nostalgia with cinematic melancholy. Now in her early thirties and newly married, Pilbeam revisits past heartaches and infatuations, capturing the bittersweet rush of youthful love. Like its namesake candy, Liquorice is layered, complex, and emotionally intense—an ode to the beauty and pain of impermanent connection.
